#7: RETURN TO CENTER

Always have a soft, centered place to land.

When you consider why people go to church or meditate or find another way to find internal peace in the midst to external chaos, it is to be able to gain and glean from practices that give them a central, focused way to be still. To return to center is to establish a space, a thing that helps you to not just find calm but to Be calm, create calm and clarity no matter what is happening around you.

Do the work to work what works for you but be clear that it works first. I often say that church is The Filling Station and you have to come in acknowledging that you are exhausted and emptied out by the week you’ve endured. That will allow you to be okay coming in hands up, heart open and to be there, at the center of a space of Grace, to refuel. Go for a walk. Meditate in your living room. Find your center and when stress or crazy comes, return there and get your piece of peace.

#8: GET OFF YOUR ASS AND DO SOMETHING!

Of all of my sermons as pastor, this title speaks most ferociously to the combination of spirituality and practical living that I feel is my personal style. The story from Matthew 21 that is known as Psalm Sunday walks us through Jesus’ specifically telling his disciples to go and get an ass from the local farmer, which he slowly rides into town, looking each person in the eye as he slowly moves, engaging them. He then gets off of that slow moving, hard working, burden bearing beast and “takes back the church,” throwing out elements that made the church no longer welcoming for people in need.

When are you going to look at your life and all of the hard work, the sacrifice for others and all of the slow pacing that you do when it comes to you and GET BUSY? It is your time to get up and do something for you. It’s not selfish. It’s self sustaining. You have worked hard and if you don’t begin to build the life that you’ve worked so diligently to envision, you will being to stop trusting yourself with your own life and nothing good comes of not trusting the chooser.
Breathe and stop, for real and then get off of all of the about-to and should-have-done and do something to reclaim the life that you inadvertently let life and family, responsibility and the disease-to-please take over. Get up and thank that ass for bearing the weight of your slow journey and acknowledge that now it’s time to gallop!

When you can get to the little child within you who believed that you could be or achieve more OR the adult you, who never had that childhood but who still holds that belief, then you’ve got to come clean!

Tell the whole truth about your life, your past and your plans and stop holding who you should have been against you! Turn your light on and like a child, come to God already forgiven, like kids who fight and then go play. Until you can kick up the dirt of your old self and like a kid, just frolic in it, you will never know peace.

Redeem yourself from the darkness of your past by turning the light on and seeing that you were saved by grace, for greatness!

My God, something special happened on this season of @BETSundayBest and I think they figured out how to do competition AND make room for the Holy Ghost. @yolandaadams sang for souls that are broken and bruised and how Grace will keep you #InTheMidstOfItAll and I got my step. This is the 3rd time this season I have had to move furniture and #ShoutItOut. #Gloooooooooory!!!

@yolandaadams broke something free this evening on @BETSundayBest #MyGod
